Softball: Eagles wear down Raiders, score late to win Berks I showdown

Undefeated Exeter was limited to one run through five innings in its Berks I showdown with Twin Valley.

But the Eagles hitters battled Twin Valley sophomore Grace Marsalo with long at-bats, forcing Twin Valley coach Tony Marsalo to remove his daughter because of a high pitch count.

The visiting Eagles took advantage with a six-run sixth inning and went on to defeat Twin Valley 10-1 to remain the only undefeated team in the Berks Softball League.

"We absolutely battled," said Exeter coach Dave Hangen. "We have some pretty quick bats."

Exeter used those quick bats to foul off plenty of two-strike pitches to prolong its at-bats. When Grace Marsalo's pitch count reached 90 after five innings, she was done on a cool, damp night.

Last year, Marsalo was unable to pitch during the second half of her freshman year because of an injury.

"We learned last year that we need to be healthy going into the postseason," Tony Marsalo said. "We want Berks I and we have another shot at them. I'm not taking the chance this early in the season with this weather."

The first five innings were a duel between Exeter senior Sarah Musselman and Marsalo.

Exeter (5-0, 10-0) took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Paola Texidor in the second. Twin Valley (4-1, 8-2) tied it in the fourth when Brittany Charron hit a solo home run.

Through five innings each team had a run on two hits.

That changed when Zoe Texidor greeted Twin Valley reliever Brittany Evans with an infield single to start the sixth. Exeter, which averages just over 10 runs per game, got six more hits in the inning which was capped by Halle Kisamore's two-run homer.

"I needed a hit to get the momentum going our way," said Zoe Texidor, who scored the go-ahead run on a single by Jordan Denunzio. "I knew the other girls were going to bring me in and keep it going."

Kisamore also had an RBI double in a three-run seventh inning as the Eagles picked up nine runs on 11 hits over the last two innings.

That was plenty of support for Musselman, who struck out 10 and limited Twin Valley to four hits. The Eagles also turned in two defensive gems to throttle a Twin Valley offense that averaged 10 runs through its first nine games.
