There's no such thing as the perfect game.

Ask any football coach; he'll find something for his team to work on at the next practice.

Still, it was difficult to find fault with Exeter's performance in a Section 1 game Friday night at Fleetwood. The Eagles scored on all five of their first-half possessions and the defense turned in its first shutout of the season in a 42-0 victory.

Senior defensive back Ryan Barzd said the zero on the scoreboard was a nice bonus.

"The defense together played great," Barzd said. "It helped that the offense put the points up, too.

"We played against the same type of offense for a couple weeks straight. We know what we're doing at this point. We just kept the same thing going."

The Eagles (2-1, 5-2) are tied with Conrad Weiser and Reading High - the next two opponents on Exeter's schedule - in Section 1 and remain a game behind first-place Gov. Mifflin.

Exeter piled up 340 rushing yards vs. Fleetwood (0-4, 1-6).

Nick Sarangoulis had eight carries for 139 yards and two touchdowns by halftime.

Brandon Unterkoefler finished with 104 rushing yards, including a 75-yard dash on the opening play of Exeter's fourth possession to give the Eagles a 28-0 lead with 5:24 left in the second quarter. The quarterback also threw for 140 yards, completing 8-of-11 attempts with one interception.

Gabe Schappell caught six passes for 104 yards and also ran for a touchdown.

"The nice thing is we spread it around," Exeter coach Matt Bauer said. "We used our weapons - Gabe, Brandon, Nick. We were hitting on all cylinders, and the line did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage."

The defense was stellar, too, holding one of the league's better offenses to 160 yards. The Tigers got within Exeter's 10-yard line in the final minute of the first half, but couldn't convert.
