After a sluggish start last week, the Exeter football team knew it couldn't afford to give Reading High an opening Friday night.

The Eagles, in the hunt for a District 3 Class 5A playoff spot, wanted a complete effort this time.

They got it, jumping out to a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter and never looking back. Exeter beat the Red Knights 40-0 in a Berks Football League Section 1 game at Reiffton to keep marching toward the postseason.

Gabe Schappell caught two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Eagles (4-1, 7-2).

"We knew we had to come out fast in the first half because Reading is a good team," Schappell said. "They have good athletes and can come out fast, so we knew we had to put the pedal to the metal and start out fast."

Schappell and quarterback Brandon Unterkoefler connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass on the second play from scrimmage to get things going. That was set up by a 38-yard completion on the game's first play.

Overall, Schappell caught seven passes for 109 yards, including a 14-yard TD from Unterkoefler in the third quarter.

The tandem looked comfortable moving down the field, something Schappell attributed to extra work he does with Unterkoefler.

"We hook up on the field after workouts and play catch," Schappell said. "We go over routes and plays. We bonded over the summer."

Nick Sarangoulis rushed for a 15-yard TD later in the first quarter to make it 13-0. The junior running back had 100 yards and 15 carries to surpass 1,000 yards for a second consecutive season
