WILSON HIGH SCHOOL: 0

Exeter didn't do anything excessive against Wilson.

Keeping everything simple, the Eagles slowly asserted themselves, reaching a place that is all too familiar: first place in Berks I.

With the winner taking solo possession of the top spot between two unbeatens, Exeter defeated Wilson 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) at West Lawn Tuesday.

"We had the best service receive we have had all year," senior libero Tessa Rossetti said. "We have a really strong offense so when we have good passing we can utilize all of our hitters."

It was an all-around team effort for the Eagles (5-0, 5-0). With the passing game on point, junior Alexis Schwenk was able to distribute the ball for 22 assists, with no player reaching double-digit kills.

"All five of our hitters can catch fire at any point and take over," coach Jason Grove said.

However, Grove has noticed a tendency in tournaments for his side to rely on returning All-Berks selection Emily Hangen, a senior. That wasn't the case against the Bulldogs (4-1, 4-2).

"That's what I'm happiest about," Grove said of not relying on Hangen. "It was pretty spread out. She had her normal great match but she didn't carry the entire load offensively and we are going to need others to step up later this season."

Hangen finished with five kills and five aces, with junior Blair Eckel recording seven kills. Freshmen Abby Campbell and Drew Kofke, had seven and six kills, respectively.

"It's great to have young players play so well under pressure," Rossetti said.

At the beginning of the match it seemed that Exeter would be in a close one with Wilson.

The teams traded points in the first set, to 13-13. Then the Eagles' strong serve started giving the Bulldogs trouble. Hangen recorded three of her aces in a five-point run. After Wilson took two points, Exeter took the opening set, winning the final seven points with Eckel serving and recording her two aces in the match.

From that point, the Eagles controlled the final two sets. Jumping out to a 15-6 lead in the second set and a 17-5 lead in the third to put away the match.

"We really started to serve well and hit well," Rossetti said. "Once we started doing that, we got a lot more comfortable."

Once Wilson fell behind, the Bulldogs struggled to stay close and sustain any run.

"Exeter is an intimidating team no matter what year it is," Wilson coach Cali Snell said. "We just lost our momentum and being young that got to us. At the end of the day, we just didn't have the drive to get us past a couple of our errors."

Leading the Bulldogs attack was junior Clare Davison with 11 kills to go along with two blocks.

"(Davison) is always one to run into a wall to keep the ball alive," Snell said. "The other girls feed off of her and she drives our team in a number of ways."
